Male Sperm and Female Ovum

This picture above is of the male sperm, also known as the male reproductive cell, or gamete.  They are extremely small (about 0.002 inches), and anywhere from 40 million to over a billion sperm can be released at one time.

The male gamete joins with the female gamete, or egg, or female ovum (pictured below) to form one new zygote.  The female ovum is also small, but much bigger than the male sperm (about 30 times bigger).
